Industry Relevance

Film Festival Cannes is an annual festival dedicated to the celebration of diversity in cinema. The event is held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès every year in May and has within its 70 years of history been a beacon for the industry. Cannes Festival dominates the film industry on a global level – every major mainstream print or online media talks about the film festival in Cannes.

This ranges from the fashion statements made at the Red Carpet, which has been a cultural institution, or the winners at the Palme d'Or and Grand Prix. It’s an event that keeps on giving and also whose relevance has extended to developing other regions. The festival has successful satellite events in the Buenos Aires Cannes Film Week, Cannes Films in Bucharest and Festival de Cannes Film Week in Hong Kong.

Outside the faces and elite of the film industry, the film festival celebrates the behind-the-scenes professionals that make movie magic happen in the first place. The Marché du Film branch of the Cannes Film Festival attracts cinematographers from all over the world, and it’s considered the biggest event in the world with 40,000 people in attendance. National and regional film institutions from all over the world are able to meet freely at the Village International. The space consists of white pavilions near the Riviera Side beach and Pantiero side of the port. Visitors have a direct way to reach the Palais des Festivals.

The Village International, held since 2000, is host to numerous press conferences, cocktail parties or announcements of new projects. It’s where all the major filmmaking news breaks for the first time and creates waves across the place. This is also where a lot of contract signings take place.

Who Are You Going to Meet?

Film Festival Cannes is a truly unique mix of nationalities. The main part of the festival is visited by the biggest names from the film world and there is a great presence from the States and Europe. The screenings available to the public are more or less dominated by French audiences. There’s a lot to be said about the professional audience at Marché du Film, which includes filmmakers and buyers and producers. There were 121 countries represented with the USA, France and the UK in the lead, but also from China, Brazil and Argentina. Perhaps the most interesting new presence to come to the festival is from Africa with Cameroon, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sudan and Tanzania.

In terms of types of visitors that are able to attend, there are different types of accreditation for the different types of groups that are allowed to attend. Professionals can procure the Film Professionals Accreditation, the Marché du Film Accreditation and the Marché du Film Online Accreditation. Film enthusiasts can also purchase entrance to the general festival selection without access to the professional areas. They need to get the Cinephiles Accreditation and the “Three Days in Cannes” Accreditation. Having these accreditations grants visitors access to Competition, Un Certain Regard, Special Screenings, Out of Competition, Cannes Classics, Cinéma de la Plage programme and the Palais des Fest.

Additional Value of Attending

The Cannes Film Festival has a lot to offer to its audience in terms of events throughout the main screenings in the different selections. You can sign up for masterclasses and tribute. Each year the programme is updated with new items and initiatives. In 2021, one of the highlights was the series of "Rendez-vous" sessions. Each session featured phenomenal forces in the film industry, who had a lot of experience and insights to share. These names include Bong Joon-ho, Matt Damon, Steve McQueen, and Isabelle Huppert, as well as Marco Bellocchio and Jodie Foster.

The Festival has developed over the years and changed its approaches to discovering new talents. Many new initiatives have been introduced in highlighting the great work out there through awards such as the Caméra d’or the best film presented either in the Official Selection, during Directors’ Fortnight or during the Semaine de la Critique. There’s also the "Jeune Cinéma" section presents film school works in the LA CINEF selection. Recognising the value of short films has also been a major step in fostering new talent and encouraging professional connections. The result is the development and expansion of ‘Cannes Short Films’.
