Malaga’s yachting industry has experienced a healthy recovery, which might seem surprising at first given the prolonged period of international uncertainties and unrest. Nevertheless, sailing has seen growing popularity, which has rejuvenated the nautical sector in Andalucía, particularly along the Costa del Sol. The pandemic is still fresh in people’s minds, but that hasn’t put a damper on sailing and yachting tourism. Berth occupancy is projected to match or exceed 2021 levels with some marinas anticipating full capacity.
According to the latest report by Spain's National Association of Nautical Businesses (ANEN), the yacht market in 2021 recorded its most promising performance since 2008, signaling a remarkable recovery from the economic downturn. With 7,178 yachts registered – 17% higher than 2019 and a significant 33% increase from 2020 – the sector is on the mend. Manuel Jiménez, president of Marinas de Andalucía and manager of the Benalmádena marina, attributes this resurgence to a heightened awareness of sailing’s health benefits. Notably, the rise in interest is mirrored in the soaring enrollment figures for sailing courses, with 95,000 more individuals registering in 2021 - an encouraging sign of sustained growth.
Moreover, the charter market is experiencing substantial growth, with a 25% increase in yacht registrations for commercial use compared to 2019. In 2021, Andalucía emerged as a leading player, capturing the highest market share (21.6%) and witnessing a significant uptick in registrations. Despite the positive momentum observed in 2021, concerns loom over the potential impact of ongoing international uncertainties on this year's prospects. ANEN reports a nine percent dip in leisure yacht registrations nationwide compared to the previous year, underscoring the prevailing uncertainties. However, Malaga province stands out with a 16.67% increase in registrations, solidifying its position as a key market within Andalucía. Even so, rental market remains buoyant and with the new IGY Marina, the city is opening up to luxury superyachts.
