Saint-Bonnet-de-Joux is one of the French communes located in the Saône-et-Loire department. It is in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France.  It has a total area of 29.43 km 2. The commune has a relatively ancient past, with record dating back as far as the 15th century. The commune is most noted for its extensive agriculture and livestock history. Saint-Bonnet-de-Joux receives its name from the patron saint of the commune's church. This saint was known as Saint Bonnet. The Joux part of the name is derived from a natural formation known as the Montagne de Joux. According to certain sources, the formation was consecrated in ancient times to Jupiter. The commune's past can be traced in documents to the 15th century. It was during these times that the municipality developed as an agricultural area.
