Mayflower Park was constructed on reclaimed land from mud flatlands in the 1930s. It was originally known as the Royal Pier Recreation Ground and at least until 1955, part of it was used as an illegal car parking site. During the same year, the park was renamed to Mayflower Park and refurbished. The name of the park is derived from the name of the historic ship Mayflower. It is the vessel on which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed in 1620 when travelling to America. The venue can be reached in 20 minutes by car from Southampton Airport.
