The Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is a French municipal commune. It is in the Grand Est region of the country. The commune can be found in the Vosges Mountains' massif, in the area occupied by the V-shaped valley of the Liepvrette River. It has a population of 5072 people. The commune is the hosting location of the Mineral and Gem Fair.
Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines has an ancient past which is interconnected with its mines. Its first mentioning as a city is in 1078 when the Duke of Lorraine, Theodoric II returned the tithes of the city to the local convent. Yet, it is speculated by some historians that the history of the commune might extend to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The commune consists of 21 localities and has an area of 45.23 m2. It can be reached in about an hour from Strasbourg Airport by car.
