Upcoming Trade Shows Lisbon, Portugal for Internet

Lisbon harbours large ambitions for its Internet services industry as the city vies for the coveted spot among Europe’s key digital connectivity centres. Portugal’s capital is uniquely equipped with a concentrated and interconnected network infrastructure. There’s also the fact that the city is located right on the Atlantic coast, or that it’s been quickly building and running data centres. All in all, Lisbon is assuming the role as the gateway for digital traffic between Europe and the Americas. One of the major factors distinguishing Lisbon in the global internet services industry is the concentration of its network infrastructure. Within a radius of just 100 kilometres, Lisbon hosts four major international cable landing stations and three main Internet Exchanges (IXs). This setup allows for faster and more reliable data transmission while enhancing the overall resilience of the network. Portugal's five cable landing stations, distributed along its coastline, provide additional redundancy, which has the added benefit of strengthening the network against any and all potential disruptions. This interconnected infrastructure is not just a domestic asset but also a global one. The city's proximity to major submarine cables, such as the EllaLink cable, which directly connects Portugal to Brazil, strengthens Lisbon’s role as a transatlantic node. This connection is increasingly taken advantage of by international network operators, particularly those from Brazil. Since the arrival of DE-CIX in 2019, Lisbon’s internet exchange ecosystem has expanded significantly. DE-CIX, the world's leading Internet Exchange operator, has made Lisbon its largest IX in Portugal, with 60 connected networks, including new additions from Brazil. This development has been pivotal in transforming the Portuguese capital into a hub for international networks seeking efficient, low-latency connections to Europe. The number of Internet Exchanges in Portugal has doubled between 2016 and 2024, creating a more competitive and diverse market.
