Upcoming Trade Shows in Spain for Internet
Mobile World Congress 2025, Barcelona, Spain
3 - 6 Mar 2025
Spain’s Internet services industry has covered a lot of ground over the past decade as substantial investments in telecommunications infrastructure and market liberalisation have kicked off a busy period of expansion. Spain's telecommunications sector generated revenues of over €32 billion in 2020. While this figure represents a slight decline from 2017, the consistent expansion of fixed broadband services has been a bright spot. Fixed broadband refers to high-speed data transmission that serves fixed locations such as homes, institutions and businesses. It utilises various technologies, including cables, DSL, fibre optics, and wireless connections. Unlike mobile broadband, fixed broadband offers an always-on, stable internet connection with superior speeds. Despite the surge in mobile broadband usage, which peaked at €5.47 billion in revenue in 2020, fixed broadband continues to maintain a steady revenue stream. This stability is largely due to the increasing adoption of FTTH technology.
Spain is recognized as one of the European leaders in FTTH adoption. FTTH, which uses fibre optic cables to provide faster internet speeds and more bandwidth, has become the dominant fixed broadband technology in the country. By August 2021, Spain had nearly 12.3 million FTTH connections, marking a 300% growth compared to 2016. In contrast, older technologies such as hybrid fibre coaxial and digital subscriber lines (DSL) have seen sharp declines. Hybrid fibre coaxial connections dropped to just 2 million, and DSL, once the most popular fixed broadband technology, now accounts for only 14.1% of connections.
Spain’s Internet services industry is further supported by the Spain Digital 2025 plan, which is aligned with the broader European Union Digital Strategy. This initiative aims to position Spain as a digital leader by increasing connectivity and improving digital infrastructure across the nation. The plan is backed by approximately €70 billion in public and private investments.
