Spain is rapidly emerging as a key player in the IT & technology industry, driven by investments in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. The Spanish government, in collaboration with the private sector, is actively promoting AI integration across multiple industries to strengthen the country’s economic fabric. This push is part of a broader national effort aimed at modernising Spain’s economy through strategic technological investments. A most notable development in this space is the creation of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence, located in A Coruña. Announced by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service, this agency is the first of its kind in Europe. Its primary role will be to oversee the regulatory landscape for AI as a way to ensure the safe and ethical use of AI technologies while minimising risks. The agency is also expected to catalyse further investments in the AI sector, placing Spain at the forefront of AI innovation in Europe.
In 2020, Spain launched its ambitious Digital Strategy 2025, which aims to promote widespread digitalization across the country. The strategy focuses on key areas like improving digital connectivity, enhancing cybersecurity, and encouraging the adoption of AI technologies. The Spanish government’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, which has been extended through 2026, aligns with these goals. This long-term roadmap outlines a massive $17.25 billion investment in digital transformation projects aimed at modernising the economy and stimulating job growth. These initiatives are expected to unlock significant opportunities for both local and international tech companies.
Broadband connectivity is another key focus for Spain’s IT & technology industry. The Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs is investing in rural broadband expansion through its Unico Broadband Program and Unico Rural Development plan, which aim to bring high-speed internet (up to 300 Mbps) to underserved areas.
