Germany’s IT technology industry is currently one of the country’s most critical economic pillars in terms of revenue and room for expansion. In 2021, the IT industry reported €178 billion in annual turnover with over 1.3 million skilled workers employed by the end of 2022. Today, it stands as the second-largest industrial employer in the nation. However, despite its continued expansion, the sector faces a significant skills shortage, with many positions remaining unfilled. This has created a high demand for international IT professionals, who are essential for sustaining the industry’s growth.
Germany’s IT technology industry covers a wide range of innovative fields, with particular focus on cybersecurity, the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, health IT, and cloud computing. These areas, alongside business IT solutions like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and digital factory systems, have driven the country’s rapid digitalization. With the global digital economy expanding, Germany has prioritised the integration of AI technologies, underpinned by its National AI Strategy updated in 2022. Cybersecurity has become Germany's second-largest IT subsector, experiencing robust growth due to increasing threats in the digital landscape. Health IT has also surged in recent years, driven by advancements in telemedicine and digital healthcare platforms, though experts predict that the sector will undergo a consolidation process in the near future. AI adoption and smart social business platforms are also expanding, offering unique opportunities for growth and innovation.
While many associate tech innovation with Silicon Valley, Berlin has quickly risen as a center for IT startups and entrepreneurship. Known as Germany's digital capital, Berlin boasts one of the most active startup ecosystems in Europe. The city is particularly strong in fintech, with 35% of local businesses operating in the sector. Blockchain technology, an essential driver of fintech innovation, has found a home here.
