Upcoming Trade Shows in Germany for Shipping

SMM 2026, Hamburg, Germany
1 - 4 Sep 2026
Global maritime trade has long been the bread and butter of Germany’s economy as we can see in its thriving shipping industry. The numbers certainly don’t lie as the sector is responsible for 400,000 jobs directly and indirectly. It’s also maintained an estimated €50 billion in annual turnover, which remains an impressive accomplishment against the current political background.
The shipping industry in Germany owes its success to several factors: globally competitive container shipping companies, advanced shipbuilding and supply chains, high-performing port logistics, and cutting-edge marine engineering. Of course, the government retains its leadership position not solely through technological research, but continuous investment in training talent. Germany’s share of global container shipping capacity was estimated at 20% in 2018, which positions the country as an undeniable influence on international logistics. It’s not difficult to recognize the country’s relevance given how essential German ports are to the Trans-European Transport Network, not to mention global supply chains. Combine modern ports with specialized shipbuilding and you have a winning formula that has pulled Germany largely unscathed even during this volatile global market and tariff war.
In fact, the country is a good position to dedicate funds for modernization of its operation as part of Germany’s overall strategy to minimize its carbon footprint. The government has prompted the maritime sector to transition to sustainable energy sources, combat climate change and secure long-term resource availability are all areas where the maritime industry is expected to lead. The integration of offshore wind energy, development of energy-efficient vessels, and continued investments in marine R&D illustrate how the sector is evolving to meet these demands. The Federal Government has taken a structured approach to reinforcing the industry's resilience and international competitiveness. The maritime coordinator, a role housed within the Ministry for Economic Affairs since 2000, oversees strategic alignment across shipbuilding, ports, shipping, and offshore energy.
