Germany is one of the global leaders in the medical and pharma industry, as evidenced by its status as Europe's largest pharmaceutical market and its competitive edge in biopharmaceuticals. In 2021, Germany’s pharmaceutical market generated over €56.9 billion in revenue and demonstrated a 5.1% annual growth rate. Germany far surpassed markets in France, Italy, and Great Britain. The German pharmaceutical and biotech sectors are extensive, with over 510 pharmaceutical companies and more than 670 biotech firms operating within the country. At the onset of the pandemic, the industry produced medicines and pharmaceutical equipment valued at €31.1 billion. By the first quarter of 2021, Germany had imported pharmaceuticals worth more than €58 billion and exported goods valued at €82.8 billion. The primary suppliers and customers for German pharmaceuticals are from the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States, while China contributes about 7% of the intermediate resources.
Demographic trends, particularly an aging population, are driving demand for medical treatments in Germany. This shift is expected to increase the need for both chronic disease management and mobility solutions. Consequently, the market presents opportunities for both niche and generic medicine producers. However, the industry operates within a highly regulated environment, with legislative measures pushing for lower drug prices to ensure broader accessibility. Despite these regulatory pressures, the pharmaceutical industry in Germany has shown remarkable resilience. In 2021, most pharma producers and retailers reported solid profit margins across various product categories. With the pandemic's impact diminishing, the industry anticipates continued profitability. Generally, the sector is characterized by strong equity, solvency, and liquidity, with payment practices in pharmaceuticals exceeding the average performance of other German industries, and minimal delays reported.
