Düsseldorf continues to assert its role as a global hub for innovation in the medical and pharma industry. An area of outstanding success, in particular, has been medical technology implants. The recent COMPAMED Innovation Forum showcased the transformative impact of smart implants on healthcare. Organized by the International Microtechnology Business Network IVAM and Messe Düsseldorf, the forum highlighted groundbreaking advancements in implant technology and set the stage for the upcoming COMPAMED trade fair in November.
Medical implants, from pacemakers to artificial joints and neurological devices, are becoming smarter and smaller thanks to major advancements in miniaturization and intelligent design. Dr. Thomas R. Dietrich, CEO of IVAM, explained that smart implants opened wide avenues for new solutions. These devices, which now perform increasingly complex tasks in the human body, are revolutionizing patient care by restoring function, alleviating pain, and improving the quality of life for millions of people.
Düsseldorf’s COMPAMED trade fair, alongside MEDICA, the world’s largest medical trade fair, is a key platform for showcasing these innovations. Last year, the combined event drew 83,000 visitors, and this year is expected to attract more than 750 exhibitors at COMPAMED and over 5,000 at MEDICA, which has further elevated the status of the medical and pharma industry in Düsseldorf.
The global market for medical implants is growing rapidly. According to Skyquest Technologies Group, it was valued at $90.3 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $152.85 billion by 2030. This growth is driven by an aging population, the rising prevalence of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and arthritis, and significant advancements in minimally invasive surgical procedures. A key technological driver in this sector is magnet technology as they reduce the need for invasive procedures and to improve the performance and longevity of implants, from cochlear devices to implantable medication systems.
