Düsseldorf has entered its hat in the competition for the title of Germany's fashion capital. At a closer glance, it’s easy to see why the city might win in the end. First, there’s the epitome of luxury shopping at the Königsallee, or Kö as residents call it. The boulevard boasts some of the biggest boutiques in Europes, but that’s only the first stop. Düsseldorf boasts a myriad of shopping havens, including the KÖ Galerie, Schadow Arcades and Düsseldorf Arcades. These stylish spaces house established brands and unique boutiques. A standout among them is Manufactum, a haven of elegant products crafted through traditional methods. For design enthusiasts, stilwerk is a must-visit, showcasing exquisite interior design pieces. Venturing into the trendy quarters of Flingern and Bilk/Unterbilk unveils a different facet of Düsseldorf’s fashion scene. Flingern's Ackerstrasse, adorned with street art, hosts independent shops, design studios and galleries. In this bohemian haven, places like koko selected offer a blend of preloved and new fashion, while aest specializes in monochrome clothing from Copenhagen.
Düsseldorf attracts both German and international designers. Notable figures like Annette Görtz and Dorothee Schumacher launched their careers in the city. Marion Strehlow, a graduate of Düsseldorf’s Modeschule Eller fashion school, designs not only clothes but also guided tours that unveil the secrets of the city’s fashion studios. Internationally acclaimed designer Hiroyuki Murase showcased his Suzusan collection in Düsseldorf and some of his garments have even graced Dior's catwalk in the past. In a move away from fast fashion, designers like Miaki Komuro and Marianna Déri-Hanasab are embracing sustainable practices. Komuro rejects the throwaway mentality, crafting unique pieces and hand-sewing labels. Déri-Hanasab champions ethical production methods and fair working conditions, which reflects a broader shift towards conscious fashion. Düsseldorf's fashion industry goes beyond mainstream trends. Instead, it embraces individuality and artistic expression above all else.
