The German fashion industry assumes a leadership position in Europe for its craftsmanship, design and forward-thinking business strategies. It takes one look at the unconventional work of young designers or the collections of established brands that grace international runways to see why the German market enjoys a high level of prestige and fame across borders. Berlin has crafted its own identity as a European fashion capital in no small part to Berlin Fashion Week, which regularly platforms emerging designers and avant-garde designs to receive their time in the spotlight. Each edition feeds into the city’s reputation as a breeding ground for creative talent.
While Berlin generates most of the headlines, other German cities play significant roles in shaping the nation’s fashion narrative. Munich, with its heritage of tradition and innovation, has nurtured renowned brands like Hugo Boss and Triumph. Towns like Herford, Metzingen, Herzogenaurach, Schorndorf, Chemnitz, Albstadt and Detmold contribute to the country’s rich design heritage. These smaller hubs are home to skilled artisans and innovative designers who contribute significantly to the German fashion sector. The German textile industry, encompassing the fashion sector, employs over 130,000 individuals and generates a revenue of approximately EUR 28 billion annually. With exports accounting for nearly half of its production, the industry holds a prominent position in the country’s economy.
Germany boasts a long list of iconic fashion brands that have become synonymous with luxury, quality and timeless style. From MCM and Hugo Boss to Adidas, PUMA, Escada, and JOOP!, these brands have graced international runways and long been household names across the world. Now that the world has emerged on the other side of the pandemic, the German fashion industry has to adapt in order to thrive and sustainability and innovation emerge as the most pressing areas for improvement. Designers are already exploring eco-friendly materials.
