Italy’s fashion industry has long been celebrated for its stellar craftsmanship, timeless elegance and unmatched quality. The term Made in Italy has become synonymous with exclusivity, luxury and a deep-rooted heritage in artisanal crafts. The apparel manufacturing sector in Italy employs over 178,000 skilled workers, showcasing just how integral fashion is to the Italian economy, and many of these workers possess unique skills that have been passed down through the generations. Two key sectors within this industry are the knitting industry and the textile industry, each contributing significantly to Italy's global fashion dominance.
In 2019, outerwear made from textiles other than knitted and leather garments generated almost 20 billion euros in revenue, highlighting the industry's focus on high-quality, premium products. Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the overall turnover of the manufacture of apparel in Italy was estimated to reach over 27.2 billion euros in 2020. Italy’s strong presence in the global fashion market is further evident in its significant export figures. In 2020, the value of exports of clothing from Italy amounted to over 22 billion US dollars with most of these exports destined for other European countries. France, in particular, emerged as the top importer of textile and fashion goods from Italy with over 193-million-euros worth of goods imported in 2021.
Italy's fashion industry is also home to some of the most iconic brands in the world, including Gucci, Prada and Versace. These luxury brands have become synonymous with Italian fashion. Gucci, founded in Florence in 1921, generated over 9.7 billion euros of revenue in 2021, making it Kering's most lucrative brand. As Italy's fashion industry continues to evolve, it is balancing its commitment to tradition with a focus on sustainability and innovation. The industry is embracing eco-friendly practices, reducing waste and using recycled materials.
