Upcoming Trade Shows in Italy for Power & Energy

MCE

MCE 2026, Milan, Italy

24 - 27 Mar 2026
As of this moment, Italy is one of the biggest players within Europe’s electricity production and consumption landscape. In 2023, Italy’s net electricity production reached 257 terawatt-hours, with over 55% generated from fossil fuels. Renewable energy sources contributed more than a third to Italy's electricity mix in 2022, encompassing hydropower, solar, and wind energy. There have been a lot of efforts from the Italian government to wean off its power and energy industry from fossil fuels. Italy aims to generate 55% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Central to this ambition is the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), an investment initiative endorsed by the European Commission in 2021. The PNRR has allocated over €60 billion to propel Italy towards a greener economy by 2026. The renewable energy sector forms the backbone of Italy’s green transition strategy. This includes the development of offshore renewable energy plants, advancing hydrogen production and usage in the industrial sector, electrifying the transportation network, and enhancing biomethane production from agricultural, organic, and food waste. But this process has not been without its setbacks as we saw in 2022, when gross electricity production from renewable sources in Italy dropped to 100 terawatt-hours from over 115 terawatt-hours in previous years. This decline was primarily attributed to reduced hydroelectric output due to a severe drought that affected Europe. Italy’s total electricity consumption was just below 300 terawatt-hours in 2022, with fluctuations between 285 and 320 terawatt-hours over the past 15 years. A notable decline in consumption was observed in 2022. The industrial sector remains the largest consumer of electricity, accounting for almost 45 percent of total consumption. Key industries such as steelworks, cement, chemical, and mechanical sectors are the primary energy consumers in Italy. Despite the significant industrial usage, Italy recorded one of the lowest per capita electricity consumption rates in Europe in 2022.
