Marble is heavily associated with Italy and the industry is a major contributor to the national economy even to this day, especially with demand for Carrara marble showing no sign of waning any time soon. Located in Tuscany, the city of Carrara has been at the heart of Italy’s marble industry for centuries, dating back to Ancient Rome when Carrara’s marble was known as ""Luni marble."" So what makes Carrara marble so desirable? On one hand, it’s its natural beauty, but we also have to take into consideration that Italians were pioneers in streamlining and perfecting quarrying methods, setting the standard for quality control and precision. Carrara marble, along with other Italian varieties like Botticino, Pavonazzetto, and Red Verona, is known for its fine veins, lustrous sheen, and durable properties. The finest of these stones are often used in high-end construction projects, sculptures, and home interiors.
While Carrara is most famous for its striking white and blue-grey marbles, Italy offers a variety of premium stones, all characterised by their unique textures and colour palettes. Prices vary, but on average a slab of this marble can be valued at $400 per square metre. The Italian marble market, valued at over $1.1 billion, is a significant player on the global stage. Major buyers include China, the US, and Germany and drive demand for both raw and finished marble products. Carrara exports sit at over 200 tons of marble annually.
The extraction process in Carrara has evolved with modern technology, using 5 mm diamond wires and chainsaws for precise cuts, preserving the integrity of each stone. Despite these advancements, the industry maintains a strong connection to its rich heritage, with Italian quarrymen and stonemasons regarded as the most skilled in the world. Italian marble continues to hold its place as a symbol of wealth and luxury in modern architecture and interior design.
