Italy’s leather industry, one of the most prestigious and influential in the world, traces its roots far back to the 8th century BC and the Etruscans, who first developed the process of vegetable tanning, an artisanal technique that remains a hallmark of Italian leather production to this day. This process, involving the use of natural tannins from plant materials, has been passed down through generations and single handedly built Italy's global reputation for craftsmanship.
The leather industry’s evolution is closely tied to the Roman Empire, when leather began to be used in transportation and warfare in addition to clothing. Leather production became a regulated industry, and tanneries sprouted across the empire. Archaeological digs in Pompeii, preserved by a volcanic eruption, revealed remnants of tanneries that give insight into the craftsmanship of that era. But it wasn’t until the 20th century, when Italy’s leather industry gained recognition in the fashion world. Prada (1913), Gucci (1921) and Ferragamo (1927) opened their first leather goods stores and created the demand for high-quality Italian leather accessories; a demand that has not ebbed over the following century.
Today, the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium is responsible for preservation of the tradition of vegetable tanning in Tuscany, which is the biggest leather production region in Italy. The consortium includes around twenty tanneries and each tannery produces leather of exceptional quality by adhering to methods passed down over generations. The process of vegetable tanning is intricate and time-consuming, often taking up to 60 days to complete. Master tanners adjust the blend of tannins to achieve unique textures and colours based on their desired outcome. This expertise is often inherited with techniques perfected over centuries. In Italy, the leather production process is highly specialised. Each stage, from tanning to finishing treatments, is meticulously handled, allowing factories to focus on particular aspects and gain efficiency and mastery.
