Italy is experiencing a strong resurgence as robust exports and the revival of national consumption are boosting sales in the beauty sector. In 2022, the Italian cosmetics industry not only rebounded to pre-pandemic production levels but surpassed them. According to data from Cosmetica Italia, the nation's beauty companies collectively achieved a remarkable turnover of 13.3 billion euros in 2022. This is an increase of 12.1% compared to the previous year – an incredible jump that signals a positive momentum that has persisted. As expected, the combined growth across 2021 and 2022 propelled the industry to levels that exceeded those of 2019.
Looking ahead to 2023, Cosmetica Italia anticipates a continued growth rate of 7.7%, which would elevate the total turnover of the industry to 14.4 billion euros. The extraordinary growth in the Italian cosmetics sector during 2022 was predominantly driven by exports, which soared to 5.9 billion euros, marking an 18.5% upswing compared to 2021. Exports, constituting 40% of the industry's total turnover, are expected to continue propelling the sector's expansion in 2023, with an anticipated increase of 10%.
The top three destination countries for Italian cosmetics in 2022 were the United States, outpacing France and Germany. Non-European countries represented a substantial 38% of total exports. Worth noting is the remarkable growth of the United Arab Emirates, which recorded an increase of 60.7% in 2022 compared to the previous year.
This resurgence extends to the domestic market, with sales exceeding 11.5 billion euros in 2022, marking an 8.1% increase compared to 2021. The mass market retained its dominant position, commanding approximately 42% of the market share, followed by perfumeries at 19.3%, and pharmacies at 17%. E-commerce nearly doubled in size since 2019, accounting for 8.6% of Italy's total cosmetics consumption in 2022. Hairdressing (5.1%), herbal medicine (3.3%), direct sales (3%), and aesthetics (1.9%) followed suit.
