Italy has long been a defining force within the technical ceramics industry. In 2021, Italy boasted a total of 263 companies operating in the technical ceramics sector, which employed over 26,000 individuals and generated a turnover of €7.5 billion. These companies play a crucial role in the production of ceramic tiles, sanitaryware, porcelain, tableware, refractory materials, bricks and roof tiles, which showcases the diversity and strength of the Italian ceramics industry. The country has also set its sight on the emerging advanced ceramics market, which is currently dominated by Germany, France, the Netherlands and Britain in Europe.
The Annual General Meeting of Confindustria Ceramica issued a positive overall verdict on the state of the ceramics sector, which has shown steady growth following the pandemic stump. After all, the industry remains a cornerstone of Italian manufacturing, contributing significantly to employment and revenue generation. Italian ceramic tile companies witnessed notable growth in 2021 with production reaching 435.3 million square meters, representing an 8.6% increase from the previous year. Export sales played a significant role, accounting for €5.2 billion in turnover, reflecting an impressive 15.3% growth. The hunger for Italian ceramic tiles has never been as big.
The ceramic sanitaryware and refractory materials sectors also experienced positive trends in 2021. Despite challenges, including supply chain disruptions and market volatility, these industries remained resilient. With a workforce of over 2,600 employees, ceramic sanitaryware manufacturers contributed €368.8 million in turnover with exports accounting for 45% of total sales. Similarly, refractory materials producers reported a turnover of €381.6 million driven by domestic and international demand. Italy’s brick industry, comprising 62 companies, registered revenues of €500 million in 2021, primarily fueled by the domestic market. Additionally, the ceramic tableware sector, represented by nine industrial-level companies, reported a turnover of €47.2 million with significant contributions from domestic sales.
