When you think about Italy, you might think of history, architecture, scenic vistas and exquisite food, but the country maintains a robust industrial sector, one of whose chief branches is car manufacturing. The Italian automotive sector is responsible for the employment of over a quarter of a million people (over 278,000) and invests significantly in modernizing its infrastructure. Italy is one of the foreground engines behind the development and adoption of electric vehicles.
The driving force behind this automotive evolution comes in the form of national incentives that incentivize the purchase of environmentally-friendly vehicles. These incentives are structured to favor electric and hybrid cars while imposing stricter limits on traditional thermal cars’ access to city centers. These measures are instrumental in promoting the transition toward electric and hybrid vehicles and are categorized based on the vehicles' polluting levels, measured in terms of CO2 emissions per kilometer. These incentives, valid through 2024, offer financial support upon the purchase of a new vehicle, with additional benefits when scrapping an old vehicle. They serve as a catalyst for mobility and play a crucial role in revitalizing the automotive market, steering it towards a greener future.
However, the journey towards electromobility isn't solely about incentives; it's about providing the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicle charging. Italy has been rapidly expanding its network of charging points with an increase from 23,275 units in June 2021 to 30,704 units in June 2022. This expansion is vital in ensuring that people can charge their electric vehicles swiftly and securely. The current infrastructure is relatively concentrated, with the majority of charging points situated in six Italian regions, namely Lombardy, Piedmont, Latium, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, and Tuscany. But that’s just the starting point. Once the most urbanized centers are converted to an electrical infrastructure, efforts will be made to extend towards less connected, rural regions.
