Germany’s automotive sector has not only been a core industry for the country, shaping much of its identity and position within the global economy, but continues to set new benchmarks for the rest of the world to follow. It’s not an exaggeration to say German car manufacturing leaves all behind in its dust. In Europe, Germany ranks first as the continent’s biggest automotive market. It also ranks first in production and sales. One out of every four passenger cars is manufactured in Germany. The country also leads in the number of OEM plants in Europe, clocking in 44 OEM sites as of 2023.
As it accelerates into the future, Germany’s automotive sector remains at the forefront of innovation with invaluable contributions that are reshaping how we even think of mobility in the current century. There are three specific areas that German automotive engineers are making huge strides in. The first is autonomous driving and battery R&D, which are setting the foundations for a more tech-savvy and sustainable future as the chief goal for many countries worldwide is to reduce their CO2 emissions and phase out fossil fuels. To that end, Germany also prioritizes the creation of the right infrastructure, resulting in massive expansions of charging infrastructure, which will lower barriers to owning electric vehicles – currently the most eco-friendly transportation. Finally, we have to cover the movement towards sustainable mobility through cash incentives for electric vehicles. This strategy encourages a shift towards cleaner transportation.
It’s Germany’s dedication to innovation and a robust network of suppliers, car assembly plants as well as research centres that has helped the country weather the COVID-19 pandemic fairly well. The auto sector has made significant progress to restart due to the continued investment in the next generation of mobility technology, which are highly sought after internationally.
