When you think about the German automotive industry, your first association might be Munich and you would be right as the city has a deep-rooted past in car manufacture since the beginning of the automotive sector. Automotive production serves as the foundation of the city’s economy as well as the surrounding region.
One of the driving forces behind Munich’s automotive success is its collaboration with top-tier research partners, developing a thick, interconnected network of universities and technical colleges that produce the next generation of top talent. These include the Bundeswehr University Munich, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU), the Munich University of Applied Sciences, and the Technical University of Munich (TUM). These institutions contribute to the Science Centre for Electromobility, a research center affiliated with the Munich School of Engineering.
The BMW Research and Innovation Centre, also known as FIZ Future, located in the northern region of Munich, is a global hub for innovation with 26,000 employees. It is now set to expand, with an additional 26 hectares of space for administration, research, workshop facilities, test rigs and design studios. By 2019, this extended research center generated approximately 5000 new jobs.
The state government has initiated and actively supported the Automotive Cluster, a coalition comprising over 600 companies and institutes from various sectors of the automotive industry. This collaborative effort bolsters innovation and fosters partnerships while facilitating support programs and connecting regional, national, and international industry leaders.
Munich is also a prominent leader in electric mobility. It is one of eight model regions pioneering electric vehicle technology, with the collaborative efforts of the city's municipal energy supplier, Stadtwerke München (SWM), Siemens, and the BMW Group. They are conducting extensive tests of electric vehicles and establishing a comprehensive network of charging stations. The City of Munich itself is actively promoting electric mobility through supportive programs.
