The energy sector in Munich is one of the quickest to grow and evolve from year to year, especially when it comes to advancements made in clean energy and the energy efficient industry. All processes and changes happen through the city-owned utility company, SWM, which is right now in the throes of a massive transition that’s going to prioritize clean energy. As of 2022, SWM operates approximately 60 renewable power plants around Munich, generating around 6.3 billion kWh of electricity annually. This output is sufficient to meet 90% of the city's power needs, covering households, industry, trade, public sectors, and public transportation. The diverse portfolio includes solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower plants, alongside a biomass cogeneration plant. The remaining 10% of Munich's energy mix is set to be covered by green electricity by 2025, a goal that will require significant efforts given the expected rise in electricity demand due to e-mobility and heat pumps. SWM is also in the process of transitioning the coal-fired cogeneration plant Nord Block 2 to natural gas, with future plans to utilize hydrogen or geothermal energy. Additionally, SWM has significantly reduced its involvement in the oil industry. Through Spirit Energy, SWM and Bayerngas have sold gas and oil fields in Norway and the UK, cutting oil exploration operations by 95%. The remaining natural gas production will be gradually phased out, with existing infrastructure repurposed for sustainable operations. SWM's comprehensive approach to its energy management ensures that Munich remains a leader in the global shift towards renewable energy. As the city progresses towards its goal of fully covering its power needs with green electricity by 2025, SWM’s innovative strategies and steadfast dedication to sustainability are setting a benchmark for cities worldwide.
