Munich has solidified its status as the epicenter of Germany’s biotechnology revolution over the last decade. Today, close to 21% of the nation's biotech companies choose the Munich Metropolitan Region as their home. This sector encompasses biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, contract research organizations (CROs), and life science companies, collectively contributing to Munich's scientific and economic prominence. Of course, the root of this choice lies heavily in the necessary academic infrastructure and base that makes close collaboration during research and development possible. The latest report, ""Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industry in the Munich Metropolitan Region (EMM) 2021,"" reveals that a total of 33,400 professionals were employed in 373 companies. At the same time, the sector demonstrated no sign of slowing down as jobs in biotechnology nearly doubled in the last decade. Munich witnessed 12 new drug approvals in 2022, further establishing itself as a hub for cutting-edge pharmaceutical advancements. Munich’s entrepreneurial spirit is thriving, with new businesses in the biotech sector increasing five-fold since 2015. The city's strength in biotech and pharmaceuticals is amplified by eight esteemed research institutions, including elite universities, three distinguished Max Planck Institutes, and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Health. The Munich Biotechnology Cluster, as managed by BioM, has played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between science and business for over 25 years. BioM's initiatives, including the virtual incubator inQlab, provide aspiring entrepreneurs with comprehensive support, coaching, training and mentoring programs. As a result, startups and smaller operations have a better chance at entering the scene and establishing themselves, leading to further innovation. The pre-seed competition “m4 Award” for biomedicine, backed by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, further cements Munich’s reputation as a leading location for drug development.
