Upcoming Trade Shows in Austria for Energy efficient
Energiesparmesse 2025, Wels, Austria
7 - 9 Mar 2025
Austria has made notable strides in energy efficient technologies and strategies over the past two decades, though the path to sustainability has been less than straightforward given the increased energy consumption across various sectors. In 2019, Austria's final energy consumption, excluding international air transport, was recorded at 1,151.8 PJ, marking a 19.1% increase compared to 2000. This increase was primarily driven by a significant rise in energy use within the transport sector (up by 38.1%) and the industrial sector (up by 14%), with the residential sector also seeing a moderate increase of 4.6%.
Fossil fuels remain the predominant energy source in Austria, with oil leading at 37.2% of gross domestic consumption, followed by gas (22.1%) and coal (8.2%). However, Austria has made commendable progress in boosting its renewable energy portfolio. Renewable sources now contribute 29.8% to the gross domestic consumption, with solid biomass and hydropower being the most significant contributors, accounting for 37% and 34% of the renewable mix, respectively. Other renewable sources such as solar, wind, geothermal energy, biogas, and biofuels each hold a share of less than 7%. Notably, Austria's energy policy excludes nuclear energy from its mix.
Despite the growing demand, energy intensities (climate corrected) show a gradual decline. Between 2000 and 2019, primary energy intensity fell by 12.1%, and final energy intensity decreased by 12.4%. The overall energy efficiency, measured by the ODEX indicator, improved by 21.4%, with significant gains in the tertiary sector (39%) and households (30%). The industrial sector saw a 19% improvement in energy efficiency, while the transport sector lagged slightly at 10%. However, these efficiency gains have often been counterbalanced by increased activity levels. The number of permanently occupied dwellings rose by 21.2%, the average floor area of homes increased by 10.4%, and the saturation rate of electrical appliances and air conditioning units soared, counteracting the benefits of more energy-efficient buildings.
