Upcoming Trade Shows in Austria for Horses

Austria has a deep-rooted and growing relationship with horses. The equine industry in Austria is not only an important part of the nation's cultural heritage but also a significant contributor to the economy and leisure sector. The country is known for its horse culture that spans competitive sports, leisure riding, and tourism. According to the Austrian Horse Sports Association (OEPS), there are around 13,000 competition riders and 34,000 leisure riders represented within the organization. Austria’s total equestrian population is estimated to be approximately 400,000 people who ride, drive, or interact with horses in some capacity. The Pferd Austria platform, founded in 2004, emphasizes the importance of horses to Austria’s economy and leisure sectors, noting that over 80% of Austrians have a positive relationship with horses. This widespread equestrian engagement has led to impressive growth in both participation and infrastructure. The number of registered competition horses rose from 8,355 in 1996 to 12,905 by 2015. Similarly, the number of equestrian clubs has nearly doubled, from 722 in 1996 to 1,371 in 2016. Lower Austria stands out as the most active region, with over 15,000 OEPS members. The economic impact of the equine industry cannot be overstated. Pferd Austria estimates that horses contribute approximately €1.1 billion in added value and generate a total production value of up to €2.1 billion in the Austrian economy. The industry supports around 23,000 jobs, particularly in the tourism and leisure sectors. Every horse, on average, accounts for up to €17,400 in production value, with one job being created for every five horses. Austria’s equine industry has helped sustain traditional professions like farriery, with 326 licensed farriers in 2016, while also ushering in the advent of newer roles such as equestrian therapists.
