Upcoming Trade Shows in Sweden for Automobile - Automotive Industry
ELMIA LASTBIL - THE TRUCK EXHIBITION 2026, Jönköping, Sweden
19 - 22 Aug 2026
Sweden is home to nearly 5 million registered vehicles in 2021. The automotive sector is not just a cornerstone of the Swedish economy but also a global leader of sustainable transportation practices. According to Statistics Sweden, motor vehicles are Sweden's largest export and import category, illustrating the industry's central role in trade. In 2021, Sweden exported vehicles valued at $20.5 billion. These figures underscore the global demand for Swedish-made vehicles.
The automotive industry is a significant employer in Sweden, providing around 140,000 jobs. A substantial portion of this workforce, approximately 40,000 people, is concentrated in the Västra Götaland county, where Volvo has its headquarters and production facilities. In 2020, the Swedish market saw 292,024 passenger cars sold, with leading brands including Volvo, Volkswagen, Kia, Toyota, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Skoda, Renault, and Nissan. One of Sweden's remarkable feats is its leadership in alternative fuels and renewable energy. The country has pledged, through the European Union, to reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
Sweden's innovative approach is evident in Drive Sweden, a Strategic Innovation Program launched in 2015 by the Swedish Innovation Agency Vinnova, Swedish Research Council Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency. This program fosters sustainable and safe mobility systems through collaborative research and development involving businesses, academia, and society. Key areas of focus include advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving.
The Swedish Research Institute, RISE, has also embarked on projects centered on electric vehicles and wireless charging, striving to integrate environmentally friendly vehicles further into the Swedish market. MobilityXLab, a collaboration of industry leaders like CEVT, Ericsson, Polestar, Volvo Cars, Volvo Group, Veoneer, and Zenseact, supports startups in areas such as connectivity, electromobility, autonomous technology, sustainability, and security. Sweden's automotive industry stands as a beacon of innovation and green mobility on the global stage.
