The food processing industry in Sweden has become a market segment of pivotal importance as it attracts suppliers from outside the EU, while benefiting from a robust local ecosystem. The many local producers and domestic companies contribute raw materials and food ingredients to food manufacturers and the expansive foodservice sector. While this domestic supply chain remains strong, there's a noticeable trend in the growth of food imports. The key sectors in Sweden’s food and drinks industry encompass meat processing, bakeries, dairy and wine. The Food and Drink Europe Data Trends 2021 Report reveals that this industry is the third-largest employer in Sweden, hosting around 4779 companies and providing jobs for close to 50,800 individuals. Notable contributors include leading companies like Arla Foods, Scandi Standard, and HKScan Sweden. Arla Foods, a Swedish-Danish dairy giant headquartered in Viby, Denmark, has over 130 years of experience in dairy production. It operates as a cooperative, collectively owned by 13,500 dairy farmers across Europe. Meanwhile, Scandi Standard, based in Stockholm, holds a premier position as the leading producer of chicken products in Scandinavia and the Republic of Ireland, distributing its offerings to over 40 countries. HKScan Sweden, a subsidiary of the Finnish meat processor, focuses on pork, beef, lamb products and plant-based alternatives in the Swedish market. With its production units in strategic locations and headquarters in Stockholm, the company reported revenues of approximately EUR 700 million in 2021. KLS Ugglarps, affiliated with Danish Crown, stands as one of Sweden's prominent slaughterhouses, collaborating with around 6,000 Swedish farmers. On the confectionery front, Cloetta, a Swedish company, is a key player in the Nordic region. Cloetta owns a portfolio of beloved brands such as Läkerol, Candyking, Malaco, and Red Band, whose products it supplies across several European countries, including Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.
