To say China’s food and drinks market is thriving would be an understatement. In 2021, the anticipated revenue of US$176 billion constitutes 63% of the global food and drinks revenue; and that’s at a tumultuous time in the early years of the pandemic. Looking ahead, the industry is set to maintain its momentum with an estimated annual revenue growth rate of 8.38% between 2021 and 2025. China’s enthusiastic pursuit of consumption upgrade continues to reshape the food and drinks industry. Affluent consumers, particularly in high-tier cities, are increasingly opting for premium and luxury food and drinks products, mirroring the broader trend of choosing elevated goods and services. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the consumption upgrade trend persists and even intensifies.
Health and quality of life have become paramount for informed Chinese consumers, which resulted in a surge in demand for products that support healthier lifestyles. This trend is most felt in the drinks sector as natural water and mineral water experience rapid growth. The preference for less or no sugar teas, cleansing juices and nutritional drinks speaks of personal care. In the food category, a survey reveals that 86% of consumers in tier 1 and tier 2 cities prioritize food safety. Fresh produce, perceived as natural and free from chemicals, is witnessing heightened demand.
Beyond health considerations, consumers are placing a premium on the fulfillment derived from consuming high-end brands. This trend extends to the alcoholic beverage sector, where experience and enjoyment take center stage. Consumers are willing to pay more for products that offer a superior experience. Premium baijiu is poised for robust growth in 2021 and beyond. Moreover, the premiumization trend is a key driver behind the profit growth of Chinese beer brewers with the premium beer segment volume expected to trend upward.
