The sports and fitness in Germany has been doing quite well in recent years after it overcame the dramatic disruptions and setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Steady membership numbers, rapid tech adoption and a cultural shift toward healthier living have contributed to rising profits and outline a healthy growth trajectory. Today, more than 11 million Germans hold memberships to health and fitness clubs and the country leads Europe in fitness participation, outpacing even traditionally active nations like France and Spain.
Fitness now ranks as the most popular form of physical activity in Germany, surpassing even soccer and gymnastics in terms of active participation. Health and fitness are among the top five interests of German consumers. This enthusiasm is visible not only in bustling gyms but also across digital platforms, where users are increasingly turning to smart solutions to manage their health routines. The resilience of Germany’s sports and fitness industry has been a defining feature over the last decade. Even in the face of pandemic disruptions, the number of fitness club members remained above nine million annually since 2014. While revenues dipped sharply during the peak COVID-19 years, the industry rebounded strongly with a 122% revenue increase between 2021 and 2022. By 2023, total revenues had almost returned to pre-pandemic levels, reaching over €5.4 billion. Key players such as clever fit have helped stabilize the sector with more than 400 clubs across the country.
The industry’s current growth is driven in part by Germany’s enthusiastic adoption of fitness technology. Digital fitness applications are becoming a core component of the workout experience as they allow users to track performance, monitor health data, and manage subscriptions seamlessly. The eFitness market is expanding rapidly with online revenue hitting $470 million by the end of 2024. Apple Watch, for example, dominates the smart wearable segment.
