In recent years, Germany’s handicraft industry has had to weather several challenges against the backdrop of the pandemic lockdowns. The previous summer, warmer than before, impacted knitted and embroidered cloth industries as fewer people had reason to spend time at home, working on projects. In addition, there’s also shifting consumer preference towards factory-made goods. However, amidst these hurdles, there are signs of resilience and recovery on the horizon, bolstered by strategic initiatives and evolving market dynamics.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic dealt a severe blow to Germany's handicraft sector as it disrupted global supply chains and stifled demand. Lockdown measures shuttered retail outlets and curtailed international tourism, which only exacerbated an already challenging situation. Yet, as vaccination efforts progress and economic recovery looms, signs of revival steadily appears. In 2021, as retail stores reopened and international tourism resumed, the handicraft market was poised for a rebound. Trade fairs like Creative World and the Central German Handicraft Fair, came back in 2022 and offered promising platforms for industry players to showcase their wares and reinvigorate market momentum. Additionally, the recovering hospitality sector also drove demand for handicrafts in commercial spaces, further fueling market growth.
Embroidered and crocheted goods have emerged as frontrunners in Germany’s handicraft industry as they captured over 25% of market revenues in 2020. The enduring appeal of handmade and embroidered apparel, bags and accessories resonates with tourists and locals alike. With a high female population showing keen interest in embroidered garments, this segment experienced continued growth in the years ahead. Mass retailers dominate the distribution landscape as they accounted for over 30% of market revenues in 2020. These outlets offer a diverse array of handicraft goods, catering to varied consumer preferences under one roof. The accessibility and convenience afforded by mass retailers position them as key players in driving market penetration and accessibility.
