In a dynamic shift, Germany’s security industry witnessed substantial growth, surpassing previous records. According to the Federal Association of the German Security Industry (BDSW) and the Federal Association for Security Technology (BHE), the market soared to EUR 17.8 billion or USD 18.8 billion in 2022, which is a substantial achievement compared to the EUR 17.2 billion reported in 2017. The security services sector played a pivotal role in this surge, constituting more than half of the overall market. With a robust growth of 7.8%, the security services market reached EUR 11.1 billion or USD 11.7 billion in 2022. Against the backdrop of economic hardships and the rising costs of resources, this dramatic increase demonstrates impressive resilience in the face of a rather hostile environment.
Driven by geopolitical shifts, Germany announced a reassessment of its armed forces, allocating substantial sums to its defense spending budgets – EUR 50.4 billion (USD 55.9 billion) in 2022 and EUR 50.1 billion (USD 54.3 billion) in 2023. This significant investment, extending until 2026, aligns with NATO’s 2% GDP spending target. The lion's share of this budget, approximately EUR 33.4 billion (USD 36.2 billion), is earmarked for air force procurements under the banner of ‘Dimension Air.’ This includes the acquisition of H-47 Chinook heavy transport helicopters and F-35 Lightning II fighter jets as means to meet Germany’s obligations to NATO, in particular to its nuclear deterrence mission.
Germany’s defense roadmap extends beyond air capabilities as the government has made substantial investments in Dimension Command Capability and Digitalization (EUR 20.7 billion or USD 22.4 billion) and Dimension Land for land defense systems (EUR 16.6 billion or USD 18 billion), including the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The Dimension Sea category, covering naval systems, is allocated EUR 8.8 billion (USD 9.5 billion) for projects such as K130 corvettes, F126 frigates, and HDW Class 212CD submarines.
