The graphic design industry in Germany has deep. Graphic design in Germany has a storied history that dates back to the mid-19th century. With the lifting of government censorship in 1848, a proliferation of printed materials like newspapers, magazines and advertisements began to flourish. By 1877, over 3,700 magazines and newspapers were being printed in Germany, setting the stage for the development of graphic design as a field. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the rise of corporate identity and the Bauhaus school, which emphasized the integration of art, technology, and industry. Early pioneers such as Peter Behrens, who designed logos, book covers, and magazines, and Lucian Bernhard, known for his minimal pictorial posters, laid the groundwork for modern graphic design. Despite their contributions, many of these early designers were not fully acknowledged during their time.
The impact of graphic design took a sinister turn during the Nazi regime, when state-controlled propaganda became a tool for spreading nationalistic ideology. Designers who adhered to Nazi standards were employed to create propaganda, while those who did not were banned. Ludwig Hohlwein, for example, transitioned from designing posters for companies like Audi and Mercedes to creating propaganda art for the Nazis. After World War II, German graphic designers played a crucial role in reestablishing the credibility of German companies. The 1950s and 1960s saw the creation of iconic campaigns, such as the airy 1950s poster for a sailing regatta.
The history of German graphic design, like many other fields, was predominantly male-dominated, with early pioneers and key figures being mostly men. However, the contributions of women such as Kathe Kollwitz, Dore Monkemeyer, Anne Koken, and Anna Simons are increasingly being recognized. Despite the odds, these women made significant impacts in the field, paving the way for greater gender diversity in graphic design today.
