It’s sports TV that’s going to drastically change and modernize the broadcast technology industry in Germany. In 2024, SKY Sport Deutschland embarked on a comprehensive technical overhaul. SKY Sport will deploy twelve IP-native Lawo diamond broadcast mixing consoles, strategically positioned to optimize sports coverage and television workflows. These consoles, built on the foundation of open AES67/RAVENNA Audio-over-IP network standards, boast compliance with ST2110-30/-31 and ST2022-7 protocols. Front and centre sits the Virtual Studio Manager (VSM) system, a comprehensive control and workflow solution for IP-based broadcast infrastructures.
Christian Barth, alongside Florian Hennig, highlighted the need for enhanced workflows and technological integration, which the Lawo solution seamlessly addresses. The diamond console’s versatility enables SKY Sport to accommodate a wide range of production scenarios from mono voice-over assignments to Dolby Atmos productions with ease and efficiency. The focus falls squarely on scalability and efficiency. The new infrastructure, meticulously designed by Chris Hermann’s team in collaboration with Wolfgang Götz, aims to streamline broadcasting operations, which sets a new benchmark for sports broadcasting. By leveraging Lawo’s innovative technology, SKY Sport can now broadcast multiple sporting events per console, a significant leap forward in operational efficiency.
As the project progresses, installation and commissioning are slated for 2024, running in parallel with the existing infrastructure until the technical transformation is complete. SKY Sport prioritizes in-house expertise and will rely chiefly on Lawo’s extensive training and support to facilitate a seamless transition to the new broadcast environment. What’s significant about this overhaul is how sports broadcasting is going to be treated forward and how this new infrastructure will affect live broadcast technology in Germany following forward. SKY Sport Deutschland takes on the role of a pioneer and it’s interesting to see how other media companies will respond once the project reaches completion.
