Germany’s building and construction industry has set a steady course towards expansion over the last decade. Alongside satisfactory growth metrics, the country’s sector is pushing towards newer, more efficient processes and intensified collaborations. Germany’s building industry is buoyed by record levels of funding directed towards efficient, sustainable solutions. The country has shown great discipline and determination in achieving its climate goals early, which in turn has propelled the industry in updating and modernizing its existing building stock.
A significant shift towards energy efficiency defines Germany's building market. Notably, heat pumps have emerged as the predominant primary heating technology, surpassing gas, especially in new residential constructions. In 2019, over two-thirds of newly completed residential buildings embraced renewable sources for wholly or partially heating purposes. It’s all been a part in the country’s energy strategy and has served as a major advantage during the energy disruptions at the start of the war in Ukraine.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) charts a path for the digital evolution of the construction landscape with its Road Map for Digital Design and Construction. At the forefront of this transformation is Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM is gaining substantial ground in Germany as already over 30% of companies engaged in projects exceeding EUR 25 million have already adopted this innovative approach. This surge in BIM implementation opens doors for international companies offering accessible BIM software tailored for smaller enterprises. This BIM mini-revolution has opened doors and created the perfect conditions for a more collaborative ecosystem. What does this look like in Germany? The creation of 16 BIM clusters, which bring together architects, companies and scientists, who pool their expertise to elevate the frequency and effectiveness of BIM implementation. This collaborative ecosystem not only propels innovation but also ensures a diverse and inclusive approach towards reshaping the future of construction in Germany.
