Germany’s marble industry has seen an increase in imports over the last few years. In 2021, the country registered a five-year high in the imports of processed marble, granite, and ceramics, which coincides with the increasing activity in the German construction sector. What we can see is a high demand for quality processed marble and ceramics, although the increase in processed granite imports was noted only in terms of value. Despite this uptick, Germany remains in a unique position in the global market, ranking fourth among the largest importers of processed marble and fifth in ceramics. The data from the past five years indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic did not significantly impact marble imports. However, imports of processed marble still trail behind those of granite and ceramics, suggesting that while there is interest in marble, the marble industry in Germany has yet to reach the same revenue level as these other materials. Despite the significant reliance on imports, Germany is also home to local marble varieties, most notably Wunsiedel marble that is found exclusively within Germany,
One significant trend in granite imports is the notable shift towards Turkey as a primary supplier, which has begun to reclaim market share previously dominated by China. Between 2020 and 2021, imports from Turkey skyrocketed by 306%, while those from China plummeted by 40.47%. This shift can be attributed to logistical challenges and rising costs associated with shipping from China, which has prompted German importers to seek more accessible sources. We have also seen that imports from India registered an increase of 34.26%, which indicates a broader diversification of supply chains. In the ceramics segment, the increase in imports can be traced back to strong demand from key suppliers, including Italy, Turkey, Poland, and Spain. These countries have historically provided high-quality ceramics.
