The paints and varnishes industry in Germany is renowned for its innovation and quality, catering to diverse applications ranging from architectural coatings to automotive and aircraft finishes. As the demand for coatings continues to evolve, companies in Germany are quick to respond to shifts in the market and consumer behavior. It’s this adaptability that characterizes the German market as stable and primed for continuous expansion.
There are numerous high-profile companies to look into, but above all stands BASF SE. It’s the largest manufacturer of coatings in Germany. Among its comprehensive range of products featured are surface coatings, automotive paints and piano finishes. The company is the biggest employer within the sector as its workforce exceeds 110,000 employees. BASF's coatings division leads the market with its research and focus on sustainability, addressing the ever-changing needs of consumers and industries alike. Another influential player is Covestro AG, which was formed in 2015 as a spin-off from the Bayer Group’s plastics division. Covestro AG has quickly established itself as a key player in the coatings industry. With around 16,500 employees, Covestro focuses on producing precursors for coatings, adhesives and sealants. It does so while prioritizing environmental sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and adopting climate-friendly production methods.
The next two companies are among the oldest in the country. Founded in 1895, DAW has a rich history in manufacturing emulsion paints, serving as the corporate umbrella for the Caparol Group. Employing about 5,600 people, DAW is synonymous with quality and innovation with brands like Alpina Farben leading the market in emulsion paints and decorative coatings. Finally, there’s Sto SE & Co. KGaA, which opened its doors in 1835. The company carved itself a niche within the manufacturing of paints, plasters, varnishes, and thermal insulation systems. Employing more than 5,300 people, Sto continues to innovate and expand its product portfolio.
