The handicraft industry in the UK might not initially seem as an important sector in the economy of the country, but it has managed to build itself to be a significant contributor mainly due to its ever-increasing export rates. Foreigners are growing more interested in the traditional crafts being practiced by craftspeople in the UK. Craft occupations in the UK often require a high level of skill and expertise with a notable proportion of practitioners having completed apprenticeships. Compared to the national population, craft workers are more likely to have undergone apprenticeship training.
The UK contemporary craft scene predominantly comprises small-scale operations with 88% of craft businesses being sole traders. These businesses also demonstrate longevity with the average length of time trading standing at an impressive 16 years. Despite challenges, such as earning less than the national wage, many craft makers are committed to their craft and their businesses. Here it’s worth noting that education plays a crucial role in shaping the craft landscape as over 60% of makers hold a degree in craft, art or design. Additionally, there’s a growing integration of digital technology in craft practices as 57% of makers utilize digital tools in their production processes. Moreover, there’s a notable shift towards environmentally conscious practices with 31% of makers adapting their craft in response to environmental concerns.
Craft practitioners make a substantial contribution to the UK rural economy in particular, estimated at £500 million. Beyond economic impact, the rural sector plays a vital role in fostering creativity and cultural activities, including arts festivals, media initiatives and contemporary crafts. Despite the lack of strategic investment compared to urban areas, rural communities continue to thrive creatively and economically. In recent years, especially since the pandemic, there’s been a growing recognition of its importance not only in economic terms but also in preserving cultural heritage.
