Upcoming Trade Shows in UK for Energy

One of the biggest obstacles to befall the UK energy industry is an aging energy infrastructure, which has long lagged behind the growing and dispersed nature of renewable energy sources like wind and solar farms, leading to prolonged wait times for grid interconnections. Renewable energy companies have raised concerns about the extensive and time-consuming planning and consent process required for new construction projects, whether they be nuclear plants or wind farms. In response, the UK government is actively seeking ways to reform and streamline the planning process, accelerate transmission upgrades, and enhance grid delivery. Nuclear energy stands out as a significant area of focus within the UK's energy landscape. The UK has shown strong political support for nuclear energy. However, the industry faces robust competition and financing challenges, exacerbated by the UK's privatized power generation and liberalized electricity market, which complicate major capital investments. Currently, the UK operates 15 civil nuclear reactors, collectively generating enough electricity to power every home in the country for 18.5 years and preventing 1.2 billion tons of CO2 emissions. However, with all but one reactor scheduled for decommissioning by 2030, there is a pressing need to replace this lost capacity. The UK government aims to address this gap by bringing new plants online and exploring small modular reactor (SMR) opportunities. The goal is to achieve up to 24 GW of new nuclear capacity by 2050, supplying approximately 25% of the country's electricity. To achieve these ambitious goals, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has launched Great British Nuclear (GBN). This entity is tasked with overseeing the selection of new nuclear sites and technologies, driving the delivery of new projects, and ensuring a coordinated approach to nuclear development. The UK's comprehensive capabilities in the nuclear fuel cycle, from fuel manufacture and reactor operation to reprocessing and recycling.
