Upcoming Trade Shows in UK for Shoes

PURE LONDON, London, UK
Coming soon
The UK’s shoes industry experienced a common blight that’s plagued many domestic sectors in the face of rapid globalization. It used to be a cornerstone of national manufacturing, but has since faced decades of decline due to the rise of cheaper overseas production. But unlike many other countries, it is due for a comeback, resurrecting local craftsmanship.
The first half of the 20th century was the heyday of the UK’s shoes manufacturing industry, but it was after WWII that the market suffered once imports from Southern Europe (mostly from Italy) entered the market. These products were relatively cheaper. Consumer tastes changed and as a result many domestic manufacturers closed down. The situation worsened with the advent of low-cost imports from China, Brazil, and more recently, India. As a result, large-scale British production became unviable for all but the highest-end footwear. Today, only a handful of substantial factories remain, with brands like Church’s and Barker continuing to produce premium men’s shoes in England. For smaller labels, limited manufacturing options in the UK have meant looking to Europe to meet production demands. Still, British designers continue to command international acclaim for their creativity and craftsmanship. Figures like Tamara Mellon of Jimmy Choo, Nicholas Kirkwood, Charlotte Olympia, Rupert Sanderson, and Sophia Webster illustrate the enduring global appeal of British shoe design.
Many of these designers are also passionate about supporting domestic manufacturing. Brands such as Sargasso & Grey, for example, proudly offer ""Made in England"" ranges, including handmade bridal shoes, as a way to preserve and promote homegrown shoemaking talent. And in recent years, consumers have developed a taste for domestic products, which signals that old factories might reopen for business. As a whole, UK shoes market remains robust and dynamic.
