In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in crafts and handicrafts has surged, reflecting a desire for self-expression among individuals. According to a Statista Global Consumer Survey, interest in crafts nearly doubled between 2019 and 2022, which only highlights the increasing importance of creative pursuits in people’s lives. As a result, many local sectors like the handicraft industry in Dortmund have gone from strength to strength. In Dortmund’s case, it’s due to the many trade fairs, among which is CREATIVA.
At CREATIVA, attendees have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the latest creative trends. The Trends & Inspirations special exhibition feature in Hall 7 promises to be a hub of inspiration, where visitors can explore trends, gather ideas for their own projects, and discover products and materials from exhibitors to bring their creative visions to life. In a groundbreaking move, the trade fair became the first show to publish a trend report for the entire year. The trend guide spotlighted seven trend categories in 2023: NaturSchätze (nature treasures), MeerZeit (sea time), HappyDay, PapierKram (paper stuff), GreenLiving, BohoLove, and VintageFlair. With insights into popular materials, techniques, and sample projects, the trend guide aims to guide enthusiasts.
Sustainability emerges as a major macro trend with 'GreenLiving'. Through creative endeavors, individuals can craft sustainable, reusable, and upgraded products, contributing to waste reduction and resource conservation. Additionally, the 'HappyDay' trend celebrates joy and resilience in uncertain times, with vibrant colors, cheerful motifs, and playful designs bringing smiles to faces. CREATIVA Dortmund 2023 featured Ukrainian cultural heritage prominently. Around 30 artists from Ukraine showcase traditional handicrafts, including embroidery and the 'Vyshyvanka' national costume, providing visitors with firsthand experiences of Ukrainian creativity. Culinary delights offer a taste of Ukrainian culture, while the Piece for Peace exhibition by Claudia Pfeil presents blue-and-yellow quilts, symbolizing solidarity and support for Ukrainian children.
