Industry Relevance
Geneva Motor Show has been an integral part of the automotive industry’s history from the very start. Its first edition debuted in 1905 and the motor show, often referred to as GIMS, has been at many milestones. The first ever internal combustion engines and benzene- and steam-powered cars were showcased in its halls. As a whole, GIMS functioned as the first big place to survey modern inventions and advancements.
The motor show covers the entire value chain of vehicles and associated products. There are zones dedicated to motor cars (3 or 4 or more wheels); electric cars and alternative powered cars; special bodywork for motor cars, car design, engineering; converted cars; accessories and parts for motor cars; original equipment manufacturers; workshop installations for the repair and maintenance of motor cars; miscellaneous products and services related to the car industry, and attractions!
However, what draws journalists and creates headlines are the premieres of exotic supercars that challenge the possibilities of design and technology. It’s the platform to announce to the world cutting-edge models and receive exceptional media coverage, as well as meet with buyers who have the necessary budget. Geneva Motor Show is also entering a new phase of its development, with the 2019 seeing the event with a new design and face for the public.
Who Are You Going to Meet?
All the major automobile manufacturers showcase at Geneva Motor Show. That’s an undisputed fact. As an exhibitor, you’ll stand alongside Volvo, General Motors, Bentley, Audi, Peugeot, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mazda, McLaren, and Porsche. Just to name a few.
The show is growing even more international with the inclusion of Changan, a major Chinese manufacturer. Alongside car manufacturers, there are companies that develop parts and other technologies that orient the automotive sectors towards sustainability. Visitors tend to come from all over the world, with European countries leading with the biggest numbers. Professionally, we see engineers, experts, and mechanics. Of course, we can’t discount the very vocal and energetic group of car enthusiasts who never miss a chance to see what’s new!
Additional Value of Attending
It’s not just luxury car premieres that generate headlines. The Car of the Year awards ceremony is the highest honour given to a car manufacturer to excellence and imagination. It’s coveted and in its decade-long history has been highly influential. The winner is determined by a massive jury of 61 members from a selection of exciting vehicles. Most recently, the line-up of cars included Cupra Born, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Peugeot 308, Renault Mégane E-Tech and the Skoda Enyaq iV. The proceedings were covered by journalists from 23 countries. That’s how serious the outcome is!
The Geneva Motor Show also pushes concepts about mobility and the next generation of cars. In the past this has happened at the Advanced Mobility Forum. However, in 2019 the forum was rebranded as SHIFT Automotive, which invited some of the best speakers and experts from the world of cars to discuss the future. The event was held under the slogan ‘How new technologies will change the way we think, live and drive.’ The guests invited to speak included Avijit Sinha (Sr. Director, IoT and Intelligent Edge, Microsoft), Vitaly Ponomarev (CEO WayRay), Maurice Turrettini (Chairman Geneva International Motor Show), and Dimitri Konstantas (Director Information Science Institute, University of Geneva). The event covered a lot of topics that are highly integral to the success of the automotive industry as a whole. Examples include cybersecurity of connected and autonomous vehicles, challenges, and trends of urban mobility, and how smart cars interact with the environment.
