Nieder-Ofleiden is one of Homberg’s 14 districts. It is a municipality located about 15 kilometres from Marburg at the foot of a 358 m mountain. Below the municipality flows the river Ohm, a tributary to the larger Lahn. Despite its rather humble location, Nieder-Ofleiden is a popular event venue, especially for corporate events. Some of the notable examples include the Steinexpo.
Nieder-Ofleiden is a compact municipality with a total area size of 5.49 km². It has a long history with the first certain mention being in 1264. The municipality is best regarded for its quarrying history and industry. This because of Europe’s largest basalt mine being located at this site and being worked since 1909. Initially work was done at the quarry manually until 1948 when partial mechanization of the dismantling was done. The municipality was incorporated as a district of Homberg in 1971.
