Upcoming Trade Shows Salzburg, Austria for Renewable Energies
RENEXPO HYDRO 2025, Salzburg, Austria
27 - 28 Mar 2025
Salzburg is making significant strides in the renewable energies industry with the groundbreaking of the Stegenwald hydropower plant. The joint venture between VERBUND and Salzburg AG continues their long-standing cooperation on the middle Salzach River. On June 30, 2023, key figures from both companies as well as the provincial government gathered to commence the construction of this state-of-the-art facility. The Stegenwald hydropower plant is set to be a crucial component in Salzburg’s Climate and Energy Strategy 2050, which aims for the province to become climate-neutral, energy self-sufficient, and sustainable by mid-century. This ambitious plan includes achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions and sourcing 100% of electricity and heat from renewable energies.
With the construction of the Stegenwald power plant, the city is taking a resolute step forward in expanding renewable energy generation. The current situation underscores the necessity of making Salzburg energy self-sufficient and the investment by VERBUND and Salzburg AG is a significant leap towards regional, independent energy generation. The Stegenwald plant, expected to be operational in just over two years, will contribute 72.8 million kilowatt hours annually to the grid, enough to power approximately 20,000 households, akin to the energy consumption of Hallein, the second-largest city in the province. The facility will feature two turbines with a combined bottleneck capacity of 14.3 MW, demonstrating the advanced engineering involved in this significant undertaking.
Executive Board members of Salzburg AG, Michael Baminger and Brigitte Bach described hydro-power as the ""champion of renewable energies"" due to its capacity to provide clean electricity year-round. The $100 million investment in the Stegenwald hydropower plant, shared equally between VERBUND and Salzburg AG, exemplifies the collaborative spirit and forward-thinking approach necessary to drive the energy transition. This project not only represents a significant step towards Salzburg’s renewable energy goals but also sets a benchmark for sustainable energy projects across the region.
