Although Buxton is too small to have its own active building and construction industry of note, it still performs a major role in the East Midlands, which has an interesting character altogether. It does mirror the broader UK structure, but there are some nuances with infrastructure and industrial sectors holding slightly higher shares than the national average. This diversification creates a balanced construction ecosystem, where private housing takes the lead in value, closely followed by infrastructure and repair and maintenance sectors. Despite the various challenges posed by the pandemic, 2021 witnessed a solid 6% growth in construction output in the East Midlands, although it trailed behind the UK’s overall 12% surge. The region faced a steeper downturn in 2020 with a 22% drop compared to the UK's 15%. The resilience displayed in 2021, however, sets the stage for a gradual resurgence. The forecast anticipates a return to pre-pandemic output levels around 2025 or 2026. Still, Buxton has another role to play within the regional scene as well as on a national level and it has to do with Hillhead – the premier trade show for exhibitors and manufacturers in quarrying, construction, and recycling. It’s a unique platform that’s based around live demonstrations, set against the backdrop of the actual work environment in the historic Hillhead quarry. Editions are very well attended and bring in some of the country’s and world’s biggest brands. One of Hillhead's standout attractions is the Quarry Face demonstration area. Meticulously prepared after a controlled blast in April, this area transforms into a showcase featuring over 35 heavy machines along an extended length of the quarry face. From large excavators and face shovels to hydraulic breakers, wheel loaders, dump trucks, crushing and screening equipment, jaw crushers, mist cannons, and more – the Quarry Face becomes a symphony of construction machinery in action.
