This makes the region home to the largest concentration of tech professionals in the US, with two-thirds of all tech workers employed directly within the industry. This is well above the national average of 41%. San Francisco’s IT & technology industry boasts some of the highest quality tech professionals in North America. A large proportion of software engineers in the area have more than three years of experience, many having graduated from top computer science programs. These engineers are highly sought after, and their wages reflect their expertise: the average annual tech salary in the Bay Area is $139,907, the highest in North America, and has seen a 15.8% increase over the past five years. The Bay Area is also a major producer of tech graduates. In 2020, the region ranked fifth in the US for tech-related degrees, with nearly 10,000 students earning bachelor's or higher degrees in fields like computer science and information technology. San Francisco Bay Area ranks as one of the most diverse tech hubs in the US, with 25.1% of the tech workforce being female, placing it second among large markets in terms of female tech talent. The region also scores high for the number of female graduates with tech-related degrees, making it into the top five.
