Madrid’s environment and waste management industry is tackling urban challenges head-on with citizen-centric and data-oriented solutions aimed at improving the quality of life. As the city’s population grows, so do the issues of pollution, traffic congestion, and the need for efficient public services. Among the rising concerns is the significant increase in paper and cardboard waste, which has led to unpredictable recycling and waste behaviors, which has rendered traditional waste management operations ineffective. In response, Madrid teamed up with Nordsense, a company specializing in smart waste management solutions. Together, they installed smart sensors in 250 paper and cardboard recycling bins across the city. These sensors provide real-time data on bin usage and fill levels. This data is then translated into actionable insights that enables Madrid to optimize waste collection routes, reduce overflowing bins, and gain transparency in their outsourced waste services. The impact of these smart sensors has been significant. The data revealed that nearly three-quarters of the collection services were mistimed—either too early or too late. It was also found that almost 50% of paper and cardboard bins were overflowing at the time of service, and 26% were serviced prematurely. Armed with this accurate and detailed information, Madrid made crucial adjustments to their waste management practices. With smart sensor data, the city could delve into the specifics of waste overflow issues and plan targeted recycling initiatives. They identified neighborhoods with higher tendencies for paper and cardboard waste generation and allocated more resources to these areas. This revised schedule ensured that waste collection services were performed at optimal times, which has led to a strong reduction of overflowing bins and minimizing unnecessary collection routes. That’s only one successful project that has put Madrid’s environment and waste management industry on the map!
