Madrid is taking significant strides in addressing the pressing issue of food waste, which has been plaguing its food and drinks industry. Recent data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food’s ‘Report on Food Waste in Spain’ reveal that, on average, each Spanish individual discarded 28.21 kilos of food in 2021. While there has been a 5% reduction from April to September 2022 compared to the same period the previous year, the nation acknowledges there's more work to be done. In a proactive move, Spain is gearing up to introduce a draft law on the prevention of food losses and waste in 2023. The law aims not only to enhance collective awareness but also to establish clear objectives and create a unified framework for quantifying economic, environmental and social impacts. Key contributors to this initiative are Spanish startups like Encantado de Comerte and Too Good to Go, which are actively involved in the drafting process and consistently work towards reducing food waste. Adding to the momentum is the arrival of Bene Bono, a successful startup from France. Backed by a €7 million second-round funding from Stride VC, Project A and Kima Ventures, the company is set to launch operations in Madrid and later expand to other regions of Spain. Bene Bono specializes in saving organic and imperfect fruits and vegetables by collaborating with local farmers in Madrid to sell produce rejected by traditional distribution channels. These items, mainly rejected for aesthetic reasons, are made available to consumers at a 30% discount compared to organic shops and supermarkets. With a goal to rescue 3 tons of fruits and vegetables weekly in its initial month in the capital, Bene Bono has already built a network of over 20 local producers and garnered interest from more than 16,000 consumers during its pre-launch phase.
