Green investments are coming to Madrid as EIB and Gmp PROPERTY SOCIMI pave the way for sustainable construction. Madrid already possesses an active building and construction industry so it’s ready to step into the future and undergo a sustainable makeover. The European Investment Bank (EIB) joins hands with GMP PROPERTY SOCIMI (Gmp), the prominent Spanish real estate group, for a venture that aims to finance green investments in Madrid. The EIB is injecting €28 million into this transformative initiative, focusing on the development of near-zero energy buildings (NZEBs) and comprehensive refurbishments designed to enhance energy efficiency. This green push is not only a boost for Madrid's architectural landscape but also aligns with broader environmental goals. The operation is bolstered by the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), a cornerstone of the Investment Plan for Europe. Gmp's flagship project, the 38,346 m² Castellana 81 building, will undergo energy improvements thanks to EIB's support. Additionally, new NZEBs, like the innovative ARQBÓREA building in Las Tablas, will spring to life. The impact is substantial with an estimated annual primary energy savings of 3420 megawatt hours. This translates into carbon savings equivalent to those produced by 124 EU households annually. This financing not only contributes to Spain's and Europe's energy efficiency targets but also stands as a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. Beyond its environmental merits, the initiative is poised to play a crucial role in Madrid's economic recovery post-COVID-19 as it’s expected to generate employment for approximately 280 people during the implementation phase. Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for the Economy, further reiterates the significance of such investments as buildings remain the origin of 40% of emissions in Spain. Renovation is key to meeting our climate targets and is also a major source of new jobs.
